Sigbjørn Apeland‘s Glossolalia “brought back” the harmonium in 2011, and on Pintura, he teams up with the accomplished Hardanger fiddle/violin player Nils Økland and drummer Øyvind Skarbø for a series of mostly improvised pieces that skirt the edge of the accessible. A rough comparison can be made to the early work of Do Make Say Think, circa 1997. The interplay is friendly and generous – each man is allowed his space – although occasionally things get a bit indulgent. The shorter tracks, by nature of their brevity, are forced to cohere, while the longer ones would benefit from an increase in form, especially the meandering “10:38”. The main appeal is the sound of three instruments from different neighborhoods who seldom have the chance to play together. (Richard Allen)
