What a joyous album this is! Inspired by the first crossing of Greenland, A Start On Such a Night Is Full of Promise steers away from the darkness of the Arctic explorers, choosing instead to highlight the hope of Norway’s Fridtjov Nansen. Spoken word entries from Nansen’s journals anchor the album by lending it the framework of a campfire tale. The piano and beats are happily reminiscent of The American Dollar; the soaring string quartet references the soundtrack work of John Williams, and the brass quartet on the closing “The Voyage” (Track 8) shares the euphoric gait of Sigur Rós’ “Sé Lest”. The final gramophone filters provide a wonderful coda. A Start is built to inspire and does just that – it’s a sublime musical start for UK artist Tom Adams, whose track-by-track breakdown on the MCO website is especially endearing. (We urge you to use the link below!) The night is indeed full of promise, and so is this young and immediately appealing composer. (Richard Allen)
Tom’s very cool website is here.
