After months of inactivity, the Siridisc label recently re-emerged with a set of new releases, including a pair of CD3″s from Argentinean sound artist Pablo Reche. The packaging of each is minimal – lowercase lettering on white paper within and without – and the sound of estructura ultravioleta is minimal as well. For the opening minute, there seems to be no sound at all. Pairings of high and low drones then begin to enter the mix. Quietly, the single-track release grows thicker, adding sounds that could be traffic, or water, or both, while momentarily allowing the high end to recede. One expects the piece to culminate in a rush, but it never arrives; instead, Reche toys with a series of static subtleties. The eleventh minute, a light field of thunder and crackle, is the loudest and most effective, but after only 90 seconds the peak passes like a sun shower. The final minutes, like the opening, operate on the periphery of silence. While the sound shaping is effective, a bit more activity would have made a much greater impact. (Richard Allen)
