Black Oak Ensemble ~ Avant l’orage: French String Trios, 1926-1939

We don’t tend to focus much on historical music here on ACL, but this album is a timely treat. Aside from the fact that the centenary of many of these pieces is coming up, many of us have been aware of parallels between the 1920s and ’30s and today. It’s a welcome opportunity to travel back to a distant yet curiously close time.

zmi – Piano Diary

The opening of this utterly beguiling album is a pure expression of the joy of music making. Right from the very first gently whirling arpeggios, the soul can’t help but sing along. The melodies are glorious, perfectly encapsulating the emotion

Esmerine ~ Everything Was Forever Until It Was No More

A few weeks ago, Esmerine surprise-dropped a new digital album, with the official physical release set for August 26.  This is a pretty rare feat, typically reserved for the likes of Beyoncé, but Esmerine is a luminary in the post-rock world.  Way
