Unhappily, we’ve found ourselves unexpectedly familiar with the question of what to do when confronted with a global pandemic and it’s no understatement to say that we’ve all taken different approaches, with different levels of success. Forced by circumstance to

Jakob Lindhagen ~ Memory Constructions

Who are we? Do we construct who we are? Hit play on this beautiful new album from Jakob Lindhagen and consider that it might not all be as simple as you first thought. There’s a fascinating episode of Revisionist History,

Henning Schmiedt ~ Piano Miniatures

This is a welcome return to ACL for Henning Schmiedt, who we last reviewed enthusiastically in 2017 for a collaboration with Christoph Berg. There’s a phrase from that review that stands out, ‘a feeling of playful innocence’, a feeling that

Mirlitorrinco ~ Odas mixtas para criaturas mínimas

What is this strange creature that we see? Odas mixtas para criaturas mínimas promises “mixed odes for minimal creatures”, the creature in question being the Mirlitorrinco, which is not only a “creature of strange morphology and dramatic grunts… a unique monotreme mammal”

The Practise Of Suffering by BP Moore

BP Moore ~ The Practice of Suffering & Monaro

If albums are novels, EPs are short stories: a good one is concise and its meaning clear as glass. Here are two short EPs by multi-instrumentalist and composer BP Moore, whose gorgeous 2021 album If I Don’t See You Again and its equally compelling 2022 reworks collection have previously caught our attention. These two EPs are ostensibly on different themes, but there’s a thread that runs through both: self-discovery and acceptance.

Black Oak Ensemble ~ Avant l’orage: French String Trios, 1926-1939

We don’t tend to focus much on historical music here on ACL, but this album is a timely treat. Aside from the fact that the centenary of many of these pieces is coming up, many of us have been aware of parallels between the 1920s and ’30s and today. It’s a welcome opportunity to travel back to a distant yet curiously close time.
