At this rate, A Closer Listen should instigate a new category “Records by artists who didn’t meet whilst collaborating”, for here is another. My Panda Shall Fly and Benjamin Jackson started by emailing loops and samples to each other and before long, they had assembled enough material for this EP. Well, half an EP – there are three remixes of “Data Module” to balance the trio of freshly minted tunes. It’s the aforementioned opening track that underlines the success of the project – all funky squiggles and electro percussion, it has a major surprise lying in wait for the unwary listener. It’s almost enough to make one think that Mr Panda did one half and Mr Jackson took over at the midpoint with another tune entirely, but that probably underestimates the intention of the collaboration. However this fell into place, it works remarkably well.
The other tracks here lack a little of the inventiveness of “Data Module”; “Mantra” is similar to the opener in the way it shifts midway through, although this is much less successful, like starting in a disco and ending up in the middle of a gun battle. In the remixed half, the Chairman Kato take has a compelling, Basic Channel, propulsion all of its own and the Cloud Boat remix owes more to The Caretaker than the original version it’s supposed to be a remix of. In a sense, they are like brand new tracks rather than remixes, and I’m pretty sure that jettisoning the two tracks that aren’t “Data Module” would have made a more rounded listening experience. Still, one inventive dance track and three excellent remixes – it’s a mighty tempting prospect. (Jeremy Bye)
Nice review.
