When ACL first started producing mixes, I knew that I didn’t just want to invite artists and labels. We’ve always imagined ACL as a part of a broader community. As such I’ve often invited mixes from amateurs, from listeners and fellow critics. This mix is one of those.
Philippe Requena is a music lover who lives near Paris, and has been producing mixes casually for some time now, just putting them out once he’s gathered enough tracks and samples. We will be featuring more of his mixes in the near future.
I’m particularly enchanted by the way Requena moves between genres, often weaving elements of pop and rock into the mixes in ways not often seen on these pages, but that nonetheless draw lines of connection with the artists and genres you might be more inclined to expect from us.

Please introduce yourself.
Well, there’s not so much to say.
Basically, I’m a music lover since a very long time. Music is a passion and, though my tastes evolve around ambient, they tend to be more and more complex with the time. I’m 52 and work as a teacher for pupils aged nine in a city near Paris, Levallois-Perret.
Tell us about the mix.
For the mixes, (I’ve already done 6) I use music whenever i can find something I like. Tv Shows, internet mixes (For example, self-titled mag when musicians make mixes with tracks they love and often explain why they have been moved by a track) or whatever else. There is no former intention but when things are ready (when i have enough tracks), I make a mix. And I always use a snippet of dialogue (TV show, film, poem read by author, …). Photos are always mine and the title comes from poem titles I like.
The music in the mixes is always something I like whatever the style. It can be something i listen to when student, a song my parents used to play when i was a kid.
