[Useless Sounds] began as low-profile way to share short unprocessed field-recordings while I was living in Napoli, in the south of Italy. After returning to Montreal for the holidays in 2018 and doing some performances using some of my recent recordings, my friend and collaborator Stefan Christoff encouraged me to share weekly sonic updates while I was abroad.
The series installments feature recordings from Napoli, Rome, Beirut, Istanbul, Kuwait, Glassgow, Dublin, Milan, Siena, Marrakesh, Essaouira, and Montreal. There’s a definite Mediterranean emphasis, but not exclusively. The two recordings from Beirut were made by Jad Hajjar and Stefan Christoff, the rest by me.Some of the recordings were made with binaural mics, others with a handheld digital TASCAM recorder, and still others on my phone. The series is going on indefinite hiatus for now, so I wanted to share them here on the site.
