V/A ~ Ethereal Transects: The Lore of Celestial Objects

Ethereal Transects is a perfect December album, leaning into the winter solstice.  The set honors the celestial orbs of our solar system, starting with the Sun and eventually restoring a bit of Pluto’s lost honor.  Each artist selected a specific body

Jen Kutler ~ Disembodied

This album is a mine field for a male reviewer, but Disembodied is also one of the strangest releases of the year, and one of the most relevant.  So let’s get the concept out first: volunteers across the female spectrum were invited

Congratulations, Sebastian Plano and Hildur Guðnadóttir (but we’re not so sure about the other nominees).

We have a love/hate relationship with the Grammy Awards, which occasionally gets something (almost) right.  Congratulations to Sebastian Plano, whose album Verve received a nomination for Album of the Year … in the New Age category.  We’d prefer to see it under Contemporary

Piksel ~ Places

Many of the albums we review offer a blend of genres (such as ambient-drone or electonic-experimental), but it’s unusual for a single work to incorporate as many references as Places, which threads in six out of the seven categories we cover.

V/A ~ On Corrosion

The drone release of the season is finally here: ten tapes in a wooden box, featuring nearly seven hours of music.  This has been a labor of love for the Helen Scarsdale Agency as it celebrates its 50th release.  On

PYUR ~ Oratorio for the Underworld

With Oratorio for the Underworld, Sophie Schell (PYUR) surpasses the high expectations created by 2016’s Epoch Sinus.  Even more, she surpasses all expectations for an album, period.  Listening again to her debut LP, one can hear the roots of what would eventually become trees,
