Gabríel Ólafs ~ Solon Islandus
What’s the next step for an artist after becoming a teenaged global phenomenon? For Gabríel Ólafs, the answer is to become a grown-up global phenomenon. This was also the path taken by Ólafur Arnalds, and we suspect his younger Icelandic

Black Oak Ensemble ~ Avant l’orage: French String Trios, 1926-1939
We don’t tend to focus much on historical music here on ACL, but this album is a timely treat. Aside from the fact that the centenary of many of these pieces is coming up, many of us have been aware of parallels between the 1920s and ’30s and today. It’s a welcome opportunity to travel back to a distant yet curiously close time.

The opening of this utterly beguiling album is a pure expression of the joy of music making. Right from the very first gently whirling arpeggios, the soul can’t help but sing along. The melodies are glorious, perfectly encapsulating the emotion

Are we happy with where we are? Can we cope with the challenges it presents, or do we need to move? These kinds of questions confront us often in our lives. Spectral is a beautiful document of Madeleine Cocolas’ own explorations and struggles, and as such it can help us to find our own way.

Nasim Kushnawaz ~ Songs From the Pearl of Khorasan
Here at ACL, coverage of traditional Middle Eastern music is sparse. Much of this music fits our focus on beautiful instrumentation. And we often love listening to it. Nonetheless, it can be uncomfortable writing from a position of relative ignorance.
